How to Calculate VAT in Kenya

The standard VAT rate in Kenya is 16% (increased from 14% in 2020 by the Finance Act). VAT applies to most goods and services sold in Kenya. To calculate VAT manually:

  • To add VAT: Multiply the net amount by 0.16 to get the VAT, then add it to the net amount. Example: KES 10,000 × 0.16 = KES 1,600 VAT. Total = KES 11,600.
  • To remove VAT: Divide the gross amount by 1.16 to get the net, then subtract net from gross to get the VAT. Example: KES 11,600 ÷ 1.16 = KES 10,000 net. VAT = KES 1,600.
  • Formula: VAT = Amount × (VAT Rate ÷ 100). Gross = Amount + VAT.
