How to Prepare DTF Artwork for Printing in Kenya
Complete guide to preparing DTF (Direct-to-Film) artwork for T-shirt printing in Kenya. Learn file formats, resolution, color modes, and gang sheet building.
If you are running a T-shirt printing business in Kenya, DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is one of the most profitable methods you can offer. But before you can print a single shirt, you need to prepare your artwork correctly. Poorly prepared artwork leads to blurry prints, wasted film, and unhappy clients. In this guide, we walk you through every step of preparing DTF artwork, from choosing the right file format to building efficient gang sheets that save you money on every print run.
What is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a process where your design is printed onto a special PET film using water-based ink, then transferred to the garment using a heat press. Unlike DTG (Direct-to-Garment), DTF works on any fabric color and any material, including cotton, polyester, blends, and even nylon. The prints are vibrant, durable (lasting 50+ washes), and feel soft on the skin. In Kenya, DTF has become increasingly popular because it does not require pre-treatment like DTG, making it faster and more cost-effective for small to medium print runs.
Step 1: Choose the Right File Format
The file format you use directly affects print quality. Here are the formats we accept at Creative Divine Concepts and when to use each:
| Format | Best For | Transparency | Print Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Designs with transparency | Yes | Excellent |
| JPG | Photographs, full-color designs | No | Good |
| SVG | Logos, vector graphics, text | Yes | Perfect (scalable) |
| Multi-layer designs | Yes | Excellent |
For DTF printing, PNG with transparency is the gold standard. If your design has a background, you need to remove it first. You can use our free Image Clipper tool to remove backgrounds instantly in your browser, no software installation required.
Step 2: Set the Correct Resolution (DPI)
DPI (dots per inch) determines how sharp your print will be. For DTF printing, you need at least 300 DPI. Anything lower will look pixelated and blurry when printed on a shirt.
- 300 DPI: Standard print quality (recommended for most designs)
- 600 DPI: High quality (good for detailed artwork, small text)
- 150 DPI: Draft quality only (not recommended for final prints)
- 72 DPI: Web resolution (never use for printing)
If your image is low resolution, use our Image Upscaler tool to increase it to 300 DPI or higher before sending it for printing. The upscaler uses AI to enhance detail without introducing artifacts.
Step 3: Remove Background Colors
DTF printing prints everything in your image, including the background. If your design has a white or colored background, it will show up on the shirt. For most designs, you want the garment color to show through the empty areas.
- Use PNG with transparent background (alpha channel)
- If using JPG, remove the background before printing
- For dark garments, you may need a white underbase layer
- Use Color Knockout tool to remove specific colors from your design
Our Color Knockout tool lets you select specific colors to remove from your artwork, allowing the garment color to show through. This is especially useful for designs where you want the shirt color to be part of the design.
Step 4: Build a Gang Sheet
A gang sheet is a single large sheet that contains multiple designs arranged efficiently. This reduces waste and lowers your cost per print. The standard DTF gang sheet sizes we use at Creative Divine Concepts are:
- 22 x 12 inches (smallest, good for 4-8 small designs)
- 22 x 19 inches (medium, good for 8-15 designs)
- 22 x 24 inches (large, good for 15-25 designs)
- 22 x 48 inches (extra large, good for bulk orders)
- 22 x 120 inches (max size, full roll)
Use our free Canvas Designer tool to build gang sheets online. You can drag, drop, rotate, and arrange multiple designs on a single sheet, then export at 300 DPI for print-ready files.
Step 5: Check Color Mode
DTF printers use CMYK ink, but most designs are created in RGB. Our printing system automatically converts RGB to CMYK, but be aware that some bright neon colors may appear slightly different when printed. If color accuracy is critical, request a physical sample before placing a bulk order.
- RGB: Best for screen viewing and design creation
- CMYK: Best for final print output
- Pantone: Available on request for exact color matching
- Always check colors on a calibrated monitor
Step 6: Preview with a Mockup
Before printing, always preview your design on a 3D mockup. This helps you catch issues like wrong sizing, poor placement, or color clashes before you spend money on printing. Our Mockup Generator lets you upload your design and see it on a realistic 3D T-shirt that you can rotate 360 degrees.
Mockups are also essential for client approval. Instead of printing a physical sample (which can cost 2,500 KES or more), you can show your client a photorealistic preview for free. This builds trust and saves money on both sides.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using low-resolution images (below 300 DPI)
- Forgetting to remove the background
- Not leaving enough margin around designs on gang sheets
- Using fonts that are too small (minimum 6pt at print size)
- Not testing colors on dark garments with a white underbase
- Exporting in the wrong color mode (use RGB for design, we convert to CMYK)
